Bamboo Tree

The bamboo tree is the fastest growing plant on earth and although it has a hardwood material it is actually in the grass family. It is a true grass that can grow to heights over a hundred feet at rates up to 2 feet per day. There are over 1,000 species in 70 subgroups and can live in almost any environment. They are not found naturally in Europe or Antarctica.

The so called bamboo tree is one of the most important building materials for many Asian economies and is quickly gaining popularity around the world because of its renewability and ease of growing and harvesting, and quick turn around time. Bamboo has been valued culturally as well with many creation myths surrounding the bamboo plant.

The bamboo tree can be used for a wide variety of products. It can be used in its natural form, dried out and lashed together to make scaffolding and huts, stripped and laminated together to make almost any shape of wood from planks to plywood and even used for its fiber and woven into clothing. Bamboo can also be eaten, bamboo shoots are popular in Asian cuisine and many land animals live off the stalks and leaves.
