Bamboo Garden

A bamboo garden can be grown in a number of different ways. They can be used as screens for shade and privacy or as accents for other plants. There are countless varieties many of which can survive in even the coldest environments. Some will quickly spread and are great for a natural fence while others are easier to keep in certain spots.

A bamboo garden will thrive the most in soil that is semi-acidic loamy soil. If the soil is too hard it can be mixed with organic material such as wood chips, compost, manure, or grass clippings. Bamboo does best when there is mulch or a low growing ground cover plant keeping the roots and shoots cool and moist. It is also okay to leave the fallen leaves and shoots to recycle into the ground instead of raking them away.

A bamboo garden should be planted with enough time for it to get its root system established before winter. In many moderate and tropical environments it can be planted at any time of the year. Smaller plants that are planted in fall may need a wind screen and slightly more shade to protect them. The spreading of bamboo can be controlled with a 60mil HDPE barrier 30 inches deep. Anything thinner and the shoots can break through.
