What are some interesting bamboo facts?

Thomas Edison loved bamboo. He used a carbonized bamboo filament in his first successful incandescent light bulb. It still burns today in the Smithsonian after over 130 years. It makes you wonder why we aren’t using it today. He also used bamboo as rebar in almost all of his constructions including his pool which has never leaked to this day.

Alexander Graham Bell used bamboo for the first phonograph needle with much success.

Bamboo was the only plant to survive the atomic bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki quickly greening the now radioactive area which is unlivable for many life forms.

It is stronger than mild steel and used for many construction ventures throughout Asia and the world. It is also the fastest growing plant and releases 35% more oxygen than a similar sized grove of trees. It provides food, income and housing to over 2.2 billion people.

Bamboo is not a tree, it is the largest true grass of the family Phocaea which contains most grasses.

Bamboo can be made into usable biofuels such as diesel, ethanol and charcoal.  

The fastest growing bamboo can grow four feet in a day.

 A suspension bridge on the river in China is 250 yard long, 9 foot wide and rests entirely on bamboo cables fastened over the water. It doesn't have a single nail or piece of iron in it.

In the 1992 quake in Limon, Costa Rica the only structures left standing were made from bamboo supports. This has been shown after many earthquakes.

Bamboo is a symbol for luck, but the Lucky Bamboo is actually a member of the Lily family.

No one can predict when a bamboo plant will flower, but when it does every single plant in that species will do it at the same time. Even if they are separated by continents.
